She

She comes resplendent-
To live her nine days;
In benediction, in grace!

To remind us-
And that demon within;
There is succor; If you seek.
There is hope; Should you despair.
There is penance; Is there none who does not sin?
There is life; For it triumphs even death, through the soul.

A moment’s realization
Is enough-
A penitent thought
Can find you a place
Far higher than kings!

A kind deed
Will pay you more than the
Richest man’s coffers.

She comes with this brightness;
This breathtaking promise!

And yet, each year,
We send her back;
After patronizing Her
Those nine days-
Like a guest overstaying Her welcome-

Foolish us!
Relieved She has left.
We become animals again!
Forgetting, She can never leave-
She stays, unacknowledged:
In wait, within us.

We may leave,
But She never can!

  1. Powerful. So very powerful somehow. Religion when simplified, only teaches us to do the right thing.

  2. Despite all of what we claim to do, there is only one thing that defines us best and that would be the word ignorant!

  4. Wow! Powerful words! It is indeed better if we keep her throughout the year in our hearts than have a mere nine days of pomp and show. Happy belated Vijayadashami greetings.

  5. Powerful! If only we did not become animals as soon as thought she'd left, the world would have been a much better place!

    Belated Vijayadashami wishes to you and your family.

  6. Nice one. But the actual scenario in some of the places is quite different than the one portrayed in these lines.
    " Foolish us!

    We are foolish, I agree. We are animals even when she is present. We sacrifice animals to her and let her dance in that blood of her creation. I am not sure what it represents. I can only see writhing roosters and skinned out flesh of sheep and goats hanging as a garland to her arrival.
