I work with words

Work around them

Turn them inside out,

Sometimes invert them

Within themselves...

Split each one, tear limb from limb

And share their screaming silences

Or their silent laughter

With innocence writ large in confounded

faces

Sometimes, again, with blasé bored shut down faces.

Sometimes, I see them dancing, hanging playfully

Below the ceiling, creeping in through windows

Where a stray eye streaks out to escape the

Stifling metaphor that coagulates her brain...

And at question time, I wonder at the looks:

Ask, and eyes vacantly hunt upwards,

Seeking the selfsame words I tried to give them

Only they indifferently ignored them... :)

And now, I see them, there, tantalizingly hovering

Playing hide and seek, as the questing eyes

Cast upwards...

Quest(ion)ing...

How I love that about them!

Bhavya Grey Kaushik, from FB, and a wonderful writer, had instructed me on the nuances of the Joria, its form, theme, and sent a link for more samples. Perhaps the readers here too, could try their hand at it. What I have understood, is that it is called "Cuboid writing".
"A Jorio, also known as a Joria (plural) is an ancient Persian writing artform. The poetic cubism consists of four lines with four words in each line. Its short and simple poetic characteristic makes it very easy to write, as there are no considerations of any syllable count - as in the case of other forms like Haiku or Tanka. A jorio is mostly about a moment in time, feeling, thought, story. It can describe an event like a falling autumn leaf or a feeling, like dejection from a loved one. Try not to rhyme it though. I mean, a non-rhyming scheme is not mandatory, but it is appreciable." It is more about symbolism, about the fleeting, or lasting evocative lingering image it leaves with you :) As I understand it!

Loosing Apron Strings

Tiny chubby fingers uncurl
From older hands...

They move, wider, surer
They reach out, and grasp

That handful of opportunity
That beckons, tantalizingly

Always a measure beyond
Always seemingly unattainable.

And so, they move,
On belly, then on fours...

Raise themselves, at first tentative
But the steps get firmer, surer

Blindly stumbling, falling, rising
Walking, walking, suddenly racing...

All in no Time, while time stands still
They're up, and running, gleefully,

Shouting, cheering, in wild abandon
Throwing the right number on the dice

That will take them a pace closer
To the rungs of the ladder on the board game of life

(And so you throw that number, except that it's loaded :)
And I'm glad, for one, this game isn't just one of chance.)

Oddly bereft, odder still, in relief... :)
I see the light, and though sad, I'm thankful:

Fishing, again :D

Two reasons for sharing this delightful poem.
One, it is for you Neeti: remember we were talking of Roald Dahl's short stories, and I mentioned this poem, much to shared laughter, at the name. Idiosyncratic, but utterly believable :D :D!

Two, am trying out the embedded audio player. I found out about this when I visited Trinath's blog, where he has included his own reading of his poetry. As I had a recording of this poem, for a young, talented performer at school, Priyanka Nair, I decided to try this out :)

Here's the poem:
The Pig, by Roald Dahl

In England once there lived a big
And wonderfully clever pig.
To everybody it was plain
That Piggy had a massive brain.
He worked out sums inside his head,
There was no book he hadn't read.
He knew what made an airplane fly,
He knew how engines worked and why.
He knew all this, but in the end
One question drove him round the bend:
He simply couldn't puzzle out
What LIFE was really all about.
What was the reason for his birth?
Why was he placed upon this earth?
His giant brain went round and round.
Alas, no answer could be found.
Till suddenly one wondrous night.
All in a flash he saw the light.
He jumped up like a ballet dancer
And yelled, "By gum, I've got the answer!"
"They want my bacon slice by slice
"To sell at a tremendous price!
"They want my tender juicy chops
"To put in all the butcher's shops!
"They want my pork to make a roast
"And that's the part'll cost the most!

"They even want my chitterlings!
"The butcher's shop! The carving knife!

Such thoughts as these are not designed

Bashes the farmer to the floor…
Now comes the rather grizzly bit
So let's not make too much of it,
Except that you must understand
That Piggy did eat Farmer Bland,
He ate him up from head to toe,
Chewing the pieces nice and slow.
It took an hour to reach the feet,
Because there was so much to eat,
And when he finished, Pig, of course,
Felt absolutely no remorse.
Slowly he scratched his brainy head
And with a little smile he said,
"I had a fairly powerful hunch
"That he might have me for his lunch.
"And so, because I feared the worst,
"I thought I'd better eat him first."

(I read this beautiful poem by Somkritya, here, which made me want to repost this tanka, from a collection of them posted way back, called Tantalizing Tanka :D)

Tanka, like Haiku, is again a form of Japanese Lyric Poetry.

[As you know by now, :) ] A Haiku works with 17 syllables arranged in 3 lines of 5/7/5 syllables to each line, and evokes an aspect of nature and the seasons, with the last line holding the punch so to speak.

Tanka on the other hand gives the writer more space to work with – 31 syllables, arranged in 5 lines of 5/7/5/7/7 syllables each. Tanka is an older form of the lyric in Japanese… dating to 13 centuries ago, while Haiku is just about 3 centuries ago..

Tanka was mainly written between lovers, as society had accepted the fact that a man’s dallying with another woman, other than his wife was normal!! After the man departed early in the morning, he would send a Tanka to his lady love with his message of love..

Notes: (After an age, I went very early, in the morning, to the temple; the peace was tangible, the air crisp, the feeling of being one with the energy was deeply moving. As I returned, the lines "Aham Brahmasmi/ Tat tvam Asi" the Sanskrit sloka meaning, very simplistically, "I have the divine in me/ You are that (too)" kept repeating itself. I had to write this :) )

More on Haiku, here, with the explanation of what it is. Briefly, it is Japanese Art form, in writing, where you need to use limited number of syllables... only 17, arranged in 3 lines of 5-7-5. I

Pretty, is she? Oh yes!

Patches on the ceiling

(This is post is entirely inspired by Arjun, the First Born, my caregiver (along with my parents and Chandrika), who insisted I had to be inspired by my forced inactivity, or rather my debilitating condition (lol), to write something with this title. His wish had come to be assayed thus :P. Happily enough, it is being typed out on his laptop. )

These many days, past,
Prone, unmoving, almost
Enveloped in a fine mist of pain
I never saw
The patches on the ceiling.

They smoothened in a blur
As I lay on my back
And looked, eyes
Distant with the discomfort
That grew to be a part of me.

I felt, almost proudly, I now wonder,
In retrospect, my whole self
Neatly accomodating to pain.
And how I never demurred, protested
At its intensity. Vain, I certainly am!

Yet now, forced out of this
painful, accomodating complacency,
I sometimes writhe, hurting,
Crossing new thresholds of recovery...
The blur fades, focus sharpens
And I see the ceiling for what it is.

So like me.
Uneven, faint scars of reworked plastering.
Stretches smoothened, especially around corners...

And the patches, Oh yes-
Each one, clear, takng shapes
That make me smile.

And one, that stands out, distinct.
An ode, a toast perhaps
To a certain denizen of the region.
Long, slim, tapered at one end
Softly triangulared at the other
The entire length, pockmarked
With tiny peeling whorls of pain(t)
A shape bubbled out, by the damp.

So like my familiar friend, who visits
Each dusk, as the lamp lights,
To haunt my twilight wall. Our gecko!

And now, you know, I'm glad
I see, and know, those patches on the wall!

In Retrospect

Wallowing in time...
That brings back breaths
Of aeons past-
You prompt. You jolt.
I realize. And regret.
At the brilliant needlepoint
Of pain, accrued, in blue,
Sometimes red.
Bled cold with each pin-prick
In crafting this
Unforgiving image of my undoing,

If only there was time
To go back, before
Meeting unnamed destinies-
Time to undo that intricate
Weave, and weft, and warp
Of pain-
Undo, thread by painful
Thread, all my inconsistenties
My selfishnesses, thrust upon you-

A reprieve- at least, this day
I glimpse anew, that design
Of regret-
Knowing, absorbing,
Seeking and receiving
Your forgiveness.

Framed in acceptance,
Kept aside, with quietude-
Only to peek, when again
I may falter...
To guide, when I may lose
Myself, yet again,
Subjugated by insidious
Webs of duties that tie me down.

To seek strength, knowing
That I shall not, again,
Craft, of myself, another such
Mosaic of regret and pain.

The hurricane of trauma

Put us on that hurdy-gurdy
Of an endless roller-coaster ride.
Pain. How many kinds are there?
All I know is this:
Each day I find one more.

And yet.
A Blessing.
A Benediction.
Invisible, tightly bound
Strongly held,
We were pulled together-
Into the eye of the storm.

Limp, spent, exhausted
We just hold each other close.
No more words-

A few Tanka here and Haiku, here and here and here

Tanka on the other hand gives the writer more space to work with – 31 syllables, arranged in 5 lines of 5/7/5/7/7 syllables each. Tanka is an older form of the lyric in Japanese… dating to 13 centuries ago, while Haiku is just about 3 centuries ago..

Tanka was mainly written between lovers, as society had accepted the fact that a man’s dallying with another woman, other than his wife was normal!! After the man departed early in the morning, he would send a Tanka to his lady love with his message of love..

Now this one's a Lion, I knew it from the first

To punch a line, wholesome, wondrous and witty :)

The King Returns...

Long ago, in days of yore
A mighty yoke Mahabali bore

'Twas none but ability, grace and compassion
Which urged denizens of upper echelons to bash 'em

So they set out with plans afoot
A little boy, his grace to loot!

So Mighty was he, the King
'Twasn't easy his neck to wring...

With teasing irony, and gentle demand
The boy, a mere God, asked three paces of land!

All-knowing, more wise, the King relents
(His Guru's pleas while he rejects)

Thus proving, in his gesture, who was more generous
Leaving the said denizens of Heaven, looking preposterous!

Thus blessed, and granted his wish, forever more
He graces this day, Thiruvonam, so goes the lore

To bask in his country's pleasure, the love of his people
Hopefully, he's not disappointed, with response, feeble

While his erstwhile countrymen lol about, placid
With a full tank of alchohol, smelling rancid.

Still, some, like me, foolish perhaps, but filled with anticipation
Still await his visit, with bated breath, with happy fascination

For in a little child's eyes, we see, hope yet, love yet, joy yet
And that in itself, a season to celebrate, will be our best bet!

Happy Onam everyone :) May the season's best dog you right through this Onam :)

Edited to add, 1800 hrs: Well I took it for granted that the story of King Mahabali must be a familiar one; and then realized that it may not be so :) You see, legend has it that Onam is celebrated to welcome King Mahabali, who once ruled this place, in which Kerala now stands, who was sent to the Patala (the lower areas of Hell) by none other than Lord Vishnu who came disguised as Vamana, a young small brahmin boy. King Mahabali was just, fair, a noble King, and utterly generous, but bordering on being a mighty king. So the devas decided that must not be so, and with the help of Lord Vishnu, ensured that his generosity would stall his plans. The young brahmin boy asks for just three paces of land, and being granted so, takes the Earth and Heavens, in two and asks where he might place his third step. King Mahabali offers his head, and is then pushed to the Patala, before which he is granted the wish that he be allowed a day to visit and mingle with his countrymen, once in a year. And so Onam celebrates this great King's return!

A sudden hug
Strangulating from behind?

Or a trusting drowsing face, tucked into
The nape of your neck
Curled into you, cuddling softly...

Peering out of the edge of the nest,
Beak on rim, wings spread,
Eyes faraway, you perched.

I watched.
And waited.
Knowing.

Though you did not.

And when the time was right,
And the wind blew quiet,
There you sailed, as if you knew
All along.

I knew, that you did.
But you had to know too!

And today you do...

As I watch, another one leave the nest!
Happy and proud,
To be a bit of that buoyant breeze
That has lifted and let you be.

The best you could ever be.

And yet...
You know, don't you?

The best, my nestling, is yet to come!

The Menagerie*

James Herriot had it easy
Gerald Durrel, too, quite breezy;
When I think of the lot I shelter
A cat, adorable, four dogs-all helter-skelter!

It started with an Alsatian, a lady, Ammini, a gentile

Before her, quite in adoration, I’d kneel!

So sweet was she, docile and calm
Never, a need , was there, to show her my palm!

Too sweet perhaps, and so
one day, to Dog’s Paradise, did she go.

But Life goes on, and so with us-
Another little one, playful and curious
A black Labrador now, was part of the family.One of us

And in quick succession came
Another two, in glee!

So now, last count, we had three!

The lab, a female, named Chinnu
Alsatian male, named Appu
An abandoned little pup, and ordinary soul, Paru!

Life, once again, was chalu!

The plot thickens here;
With little Paru dear!

Surprised us one day-
Big tummy, we smelt foul play!!

No sooner than a couple of months past
Seven pups, a littler full, in our laps she cast!

Last count, now ten are we,
Just dogs; but I forget, there’s another ‘she’-

The she, called Malu-
A pretty cat, gathered in a rescue!

Eleven of them thriving anew!
Didn’t realize, more in queue…

Now as you read, a week ago, Malu too
Put her mind to give us kitten few!

Sadly though, kitten of hers, none
Lived to tell the tale, but one, and in it too was done!

A sorry tale, the doc had to operate
When she couldn’t deliver, luckily not too late!

And now, of the dogs ten
Only four remain in the pen…

With six of seven li’l pups finding new home
(The first born, Kuttan, is ours, at home)
A new place each, with love and care to roam.

A happy foursome, with the cat
Natural siblings almost, a common enemy too- the RAT!

And that dear friends, is my menagerie-
Naughty, mischievous, loving, much like Tom ‘n’ Jerry!!!

Revelation

A blade of grass
In the vast paddy field;
The vision within
I had of me.
One, just like tthe other-
Yet standing alone
No hope of grain
To weigh me down
The joyful burden of
Fruition, yet to be mine.

And yet, hope lingered
That I would meet worth
If not grain; why not?
A butterfly's tinsel touch?
Or yet again, a gentle whiff
Of a moonlit breeze.
To tingle, tantalize
Bringing promise of that
I had yearned for!

And when you came,
In the guise of a little
Brown sparrow,
Looking, with your head
Cocked to one side
Quizzical gleam, through
The quiet knowledge reflected deep...

I knew, why I was made-
I knew, felt known, was touched
By your quiet simple knowledge
Why worry about whats and whys
I am me, the blade of grass
Like no other-
Meeting my destiny, the way I should
The way I would
When it unfolded.

My Sun Child

Sleepy eyes slowly coming to wakefulness
Recognition slowly dawning on his face-
His lips quirk in a semblance of a smile-
And at a shot, he's out of bed,
toddling around in wondrous rapture.

His eyes are lit up by the streaking sunbeams
he tries to catch-
Vivid at the sight of the riot of colour
in the garden-
Tender when he sees a little bird or his
Little kitten purring at his feet.
His diamond eyes never lose their sparkle-
Because he's a sun child!

His peal of laughter rings around-
Its music to my ears:
His gurgle of laughter fills me with a
consuming sense of happiness and elation-
Because he's mine!

After watching the crimson-gold sun go down
with a curiousness that nothing can surpass,
he nestles close to me;
And with a satisfied sigh,
his eyelids shut, to capture within
The sun in his hands, and the stars
all his to play with;
To frolic with angels in Heaven;
To know every joy of nature.

The world's all his and so am I
For he's my Sun Child!

Unstoppable, indomitable, her spirit
Inviolate the purity of her notions

A true lioness, no less is she
Never a dull moment – they all, but flee
In the sunny warmth of her this gurl, - Meggie
Who, by now, will probably be rolling – hehehe… :D!

For, in the words she writes
In the laughter she shares
Ins the feelings she inspires

Not just her kids at school,
But us too, are touched by her Grace
Learn much, in simple wisdom
Question, search and seek to know!

That alone, sets her apart-

A hazy form:

My long night was
nearing light-
I knew, the sun
was just behind him.

Trapped in my darkness
I could do nothing,
but wait...
Endlessly, it seemed.

I wondered.
Did he know?
Was that why he came?

And I waited.

Wondering
why, suddenly, the steps
seemed unsure
faltering-

And the mist grew thick!

Still trapped in
my darkness
I knew
I would have to burn-
so that he could see light,
and part the mist again.

Only, I hope, he will forgive me
for being formless,
when he finally gets here.

for blessings in
return,
not for themselves
but for their own.

How could this be?

There are no answers,
some said sagely;
Things have a way
of happening,
others said, knowingly.

Neat, ambiguous answers
to console the
grieving hearts
whose pain is
the only unresolved
undissolved,
resolute and
undying residue
within.

How can one ever
console them?

Even He cannot,
then who am I to
even try?

A re-post. Just thought of this, after a visit to a family bereaved of their mother, who passed on, peacefully at the age of 90+. The time spent there, was filled with touching moments of grief, really, in the way all her grown up children, grand children and great grand children were moved beyond words with grief. There was peace, and there was grief, each in its proper place. But sometimes I wonder. I always have...
